ICYMI January 2023 #26 – Broken records, office pranks, new avatars, and more!

Howdy, Imgurians! Welcome to 2023.

We’re back with another edition of In Case You Missed It, our monthly retrospective look at the happenings in the Imgur community. As always, we’ll include some community moments you may have missed, updates on bugs you report, and any new features that may launch.

let’s get started!

*secret Santa*

Secret Santa 2022 is in the books, and it was one of our most rewarding years ever! 100% of Santas who requested a backup match got one. Even better, 96% of participants confirmed receiving a gift, which is more than any year before.

With thousands of participants from over 120 countries around the world tasked with spreading joy to others, the holiday spirit was out in full force. From custom glass dip pen To handmade stuffed animals, beds for our furry friendsAnd everything in between, you all helped us end the year on a high note.

Good news for all those who are going to participate this year. You are the reason for the weather. We’ll see you on the next holiday!

*community mixtape*

Last year we started a new tradition. Once a month, on Fridays, we’ll ask for your sonic support and collect your favorite track titles for use in a massive mixtape. Top 50 tracks by upvotes are added to the list each month. As a community, we submitted music nonstop for about two days until the end.

Earlier this month, we got a glimpse into what the community supports in a breakdown post. The track collection for 2023 will be slightly different. Instead of making things a free-for-all, each month is dedicated to a single genre. January’s style was electronic. Thanks to all listeners and contributors to the tracklist!

*Extra Life Avatar*

As an incentive to donate to the cause, custom avatars were introduced as a part of the Xtra Life charity stream. These avatars are available for everyone to use, so stick to about screen to change things up! Thank you to all who donated to help children in need and special thanks @technohawk, @patatocheesmonk, @alanAnd @TheLifeIsYourswho inspired the designs.

*Bottle Saga*

Sometimes, the simplest things bring the most joy. Imgurian @IfIToldYouMyUsernameIdHaveToKillYou showcases that fact wonderfully with the self-titled “Bottle Saga”. When a repair crew left a bottle on a doorknob, they decided to see how long it would last untouched by their teammates.

Days turned into weeks, and the bottle remained untouched. Seeing a perfect opportunity for some harmless fun, they decided to dress it up to celebrate the holidays. It’s a mystery around the office as to who the culprit is, and after nearly four months, it doesn’t look like the truth will be revealed anytime soon.

*clean up your desk*

Clearing your workspace can clear your mind. We all get into a rut sometimes, and decluttering your space can help lift you out of a personal fog. Imgurians from all kinds of backgrounds shared their progress, much to the delight of the audience. From workshops and garages to neon-lit game rooms, there’s something so satisfying about seeing a before and after.

*Applause for the needy?*

Fortune finds us when we least expect it. for imgurians @QuicklyThisWay, That fortune will come in the form of praise. In a fun spin on a scene from “Liar Liar,” the nature of being bullied with praise is played for laughs. In the ultimate “I’ll show you” moment, the community showered the post with over 90 praises, setting a record as the most praised post in Imgur history.

*car problem useless*

Car problems suck, and imgurians @trogdoorburninator It knows best. As a way of taking this forward, they wanted to start fixing cars at cost for low-income families. Over time he ended up doing more and more, saying the feeling of helping others in their time of need was addictive.

This led to an idea. Why not make fixing cars a non-profit company? After thousands of upvotes and hundreds of comments, it was clear the community agreed. Imgurians gave advice on getting started, the things they’d need to get it up and running, and some even offered to help in person!

accelerate their non-profit latest update,

*thank you imgur*

2022 was a tough year for many. Last year, Imgurian @hibiscusqueen79 Posted about the difficulties she was having getting school supplies for her daughter. In a surprising turn of events, @TinyOctopus And many others came to his aid.

After becoming an Amazon Wishlist, the community came together to give her everything she needed and then some. In a series of most viral updates, he shared his thanks for the immense generosity of everyone who donated. Great job making an impact, Imgurians!

*art crawl*

The 2023 Art Crawl ended on Monday, and with thousands of entries to consider, our judges have their work cut out for them. From recreated retro technology to lifelike wooden sculptures, photorealistic paintings, wood burning and everything in between, there was no shortage of creativity on display in our digital art gallery.

The 2023 Art Crawl had more visitors in one week than the famous Louvre saw in an entire year in 2022. Now that is some serious love for all things white!

Once again, our judges had the impossible task of selecting only three Grand Prize winners from among those thousands. After a week of conscientious deliberation, the winners were selected. Congratulations @claireleetartist, @acadianmushroomsAnd @patrickbates On your victory! In addition to the grand prize winners, six more pieces were selected for second prize.
